University of Louisville (UofL) - Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center
Louisville, KY
- 175,000 sq ft
- $54 million
- 9 stories
- Completed in 2018
Structural Features
- The dramatic 120-ft long pedestrian bridge connects the new 9-story medical office building, also designed by Uzun + Case, to the existing facilities.
- The design team operated as a collaborative unit between the architect, the engineer and an invited artist.
- Multiple structural and aesthetic schemes for the bridge were proposed. The team then collaboratively advanced the design, ultimately arriving on a unique cantilevered steel structure which reflected tree-like form, while referencing early Kentucky cantilevered bridges, and clearly demonstrated its structural behavior.
- The unique design resulted in a 20% reduction of steel tonnage when compared to a conventional bridge design.
